Fashion designer Zac Posen, whose creations are worn by Beyoncé, Rihanna, Claire Danes, and Natalie Portman, recently bought an Upper East Side duplex penthouse for $3.5 million, says Luxury Listings.

Fashionistas are scratching their collective heads over why Posen chose the Upper East Side instead of SoHo or Tribeca, where fashion folks normally like to nest. Posen, a native New Yorker and “Project Runway” judge, had bucked the trend and headed north to scoop up the premium penthouse at 210 East 73rd St.

The classic six-that’s what New Yorkers call a two-bedroom unit with formal living room, dining room, and kitchen-is loaded with lovely details, including hand-painted and beamed ceilings and mixed hardwood/iron staircase railings. An 1,800-square-foot terrace has plenty of room for ornamental plantings and entertainment.

The designer’s unit is one of 81 in the building, which includes a doorman, gym, and outdoor courtyard. Designed by architect Emery Roth and built in 1928, the full-service building combines traditional appearances with modern amenities.

Posen, who designed the glow-in-the-dark ballgown that Danes wore to the Met Gala last spring, will be designing new flight attendant uniforms for Delta Airlines.
